Buy Lissachatina Reticulata: The Active Giant Snail with the Standout Pattern
The Lissachatina Reticulata, formerly known as Achatina Reticulata, is one of the most beautiful and active of the giant African land snails. It originally hails from eastern and central Africa and stands out thanks to its striking net-like shell pattern. If you're after a giant snail that doesn't just sleep the day away but actually gets out and explores its terrarium, the Reticulata is a great pick. At schneckenpost.shop you'll get healthy, well-raised animals from responsible breeding.
Achatina Reticulata or Lissachatina Reticulata: What's the Difference?
This snail is now called Lissachatina Reticulata, though it used to go by Achatina Reticulata. The reason is a scientific reclassification of the snail family. Following taxonomic research, the species was moved into the genus Lissachatina. It's the exact same snail, just under a new name. Other species like the Lissachatina Fulica went through the same renaming. We list the animals under both names in our shop, so keepers used to the older name can still find them without any trouble.
Keeping the Lissachatina Reticulata: What You Need to Know
With the right know-how, keeping a Lissachatina Reticulata is very doable, even for beginners. These snails need a sufficiently large, well-ventilated terrarium with a suitable substrate like coconut fiber or tropical terrarium soil, plus a steady temperature of 24 to 26 °C during the day and at least 22 °C at night. Humidity should sit between 75 and 85%, a bit higher than what the Fulica needs. Depending on your terrarium size, a heat mat or an Elstein heat lamp will be necessary. Keeping them at plain room temperature just won't cut it, since these animals come from the African jungle and need consistently warm conditions. You'll find a full guide in our Care Guides.
Feeding the Lissachatina Reticulata: What Matters Most
The Lissachatina Reticulata is an omnivore and needs a varied diet. Its menu includes fruit and vegetables like pumpkin, lettuce, eggplant, sweet potato, tomato, zucchini, apple, mushrooms, mango, and melon. Regular protein, at least once a week, matters a lot, and so does a calcium source that's always available. Given its size and activity level, the Reticulata has a particularly high calcium demand for shell growth. Good options here include cuttlebone, eggshells, or calcium blocks. High-quality supplements like our Snail Mix Tropical, or animal protein sources like Gammarus and silkworms, are also great additions to close any nutritional gaps and support healthy shell growth. Skip pre-cut bagged lettuce, and give fresh fruit and veg a good wash to remove pesticide residue.
Breeding and Reproduction of the Lissachatina Reticulata
The Lissachatina Reticulata reaches sexual maturity after 6 to 8 months. Since giant snails are hermaphrodites, reproduction is basically inevitable once you keep them in a group. A single clutch can hold up to 300 eggs, a bit fewer than the Fulica, but they lay pretty regularly. Keepers should check for clutches every 14 days or so and freeze any surplus eggs to keep numbers under control. If you're thinking about breeding on purpose, it's worth reading up on selection and rehoming offspring beforehand. You'll find detailed info on breeding and reproduction in our Care Guides.
Reticulata vs. Fulica: What's the Difference?
Lots of keepers wonder whether to go for the Lissachatina Fulica or the Reticulata. Both belong to the same genus, but they differ in some important ways. The Reticulata grows noticeably bigger, up to 20 cm, than the Fulica, and tends to be more active during the day. The Fulica is a bit more beginner-friendly and lays more eggs per clutch. Looks-wise, the Reticulata stands out with its characteristic net pattern, while the Fulica tends to show longitudinal striping instead. The two species shouldn't be kept together, since they have different care requirements and there's a risk of hybridization.
Housing with Other Animals
The Lissachatina Reticulata shouldn't be kept together with other snail species. Within the same species, though, you can easily combine the Wild and Albino Body color forms. Panda isopods, white isopods, or springtails all make an excellent clean-up crew. They keep the terrarium bioactive and self-cleaning. Browse our range under Clean-up Crew to find the right pick.
